Costantino Zicarelli

Pedro Ubaldo
November 2007

Unpredictable and brazen, this enfant terrible will first annoy with his graffiti splashed artworks. With unspeakable titles as "The Pimple of the Holy Ghost", and dogfaces in "A Three-Part Love Quotation", the artist is relentlessly irreverent.

Much can be made of the gloomy greys and unforgiving bands of black he coats sections of his paintings with, tasking onlookers to fill in their own blanks, whether that be color or detail, all the while trying to make sense of it all.

Simultaneously Zicarelli refuses to be subtle about the writing on the walls of his consciousness, spewing what the more shy might call profanity.

Zicarelli's preoccupation with the unlikely has iconic Mussolini in "Unmistakable the One Person Who Did Everything and Yet He Failed", here almost in adulation, and seeking redress. Dante?s torso is not spared in "Paradiso was Considered Toilet Paper". Time-lapsed images of trench-coated soldiers in "Destroyed House and Destroyed History" share gallery walls with the portrait of a morose "Pedro Ubaldo Ain't Holy Anymore".

Zicarelli is obtrusive in his cultural angst and with impunity, urges the art viewer's attention into accepting his message arrow -straight and mirror- clear into their own realities, be that love ("Lovers Finding and Understanding Nothing") or loss ("In the End, the Predictable Happened. The Funeral of the Beloved God Was Revealed").

And what is Zicarelli's reality in all this display where he quarrels with what the viewer knows to be predictably beautiful and bright? This artist indulges in bashing the senses of those who expect the meanings of the artwork to be immediately apparent!

Zicarelli startles, asking nothing of anyone. As viewers of his art, we feel the discomfort of having to take a long hard look at our personal standards by which we judge artworks; how to free our own minds of the Shoulds that prevent us from experiencing and reflecting on that vital Trinitarian relationship among the Artist, the Artwork, and the Onlooker.

Zicarelli's work invites us to that rare opportunity.
